3 Decisions To Make When Installing Wood Flooring

Blog

When it comes to flooring, few options offer the timelessness and durability of wood. Wood is also a popular choice due to its versatility. It works well with multiple styles of home and comes in various colors, patterns, shapes, and sizes. There are a lot of things to keep in mind if you are planning on installing hardwood flooring in your home. Here are three decisions that you will need to make before work can begin.

Engineered Versus Solid Hardwood

The first decision you will need to make when installing hardwood flooring is whether you want to go with engineered hardwood or solid hardwood. Engineered hardwood is constructed using several layers of wood that are bonded together and then topped by a layer of hardwood. Solid hardwood is solid wood the whole way through. Engineered hardwood has more moisture resistance and works well in areas where solid wood is not recommended. Solid hardwood is attractive and can be refinished multiple times, giving it a longer lifespan. Engineered hardwood is less expensive than solid hardwood.

On-Site Finished or Pre-Finished Wood

Another decision that you will need to make before installing your home's new wood flooring is whether you want it to be finished on-site or finished before the installation process. Finishing on-site gives you more control over the final product, but it will take time for your new flooring to dry. Pre-finished wood is ready to go as soon as the installation process is done. However, it doesn't offer the same smooth surface as on-site finishing and can be more difficult to clean.

DIY or Professional Installation

When it comes to hardwood floor installation, you have the option to either do it yourself or hire a professional. If you decide to tackle this project on your own, it's important to note that any mistakes can end up costing you more money when it comes to materials. Most find that engineered hardwood flooring is easier to install than solid hardwood. Professional installation will ensure that your floors are installed correctly. Installation costs typically range between $3 and $5 per square foot when you hire a professional.

If you are installing wood flooring in your home, there are a few decisions that you need to make. First, you will need to choose between engineered hardwood and solid hardwood. Wood flooring can also either be finished on-site or come pre-finished. Finally, you will also need to decide whether you want to tackle your flooring on your own or hire a professional for the installation.
